The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is just a few blocks from Royal Street in the Marigny - the street in New Orleans to gallery hop – but you don’t even have to leave the hotel to get your art on.
Stroll through the corridor behind our lobby and experience an extension of the latest exhibition on display at Where Y’Art – a Royal Street Gallery in the heart of the Marigny. We love Where Y’Art. We love their mission, their passion and the way they have created a community for artists and art lovers in New Orleans.
Currently on display at the hotel, (Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul: Set One features original works from a lineup of 19 New Orleans artists curated by Melissa A. Weber, locally (and famously) known as DJ Soul Sister.
Taking its name from the song recorded in 1974 by the Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians with Big Chief Bo Dollis, Willie Tee and the New Orleans Project, (Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul: Set One launches in advance of New Orleans’ famed jazz festival, where national acts take the stage to share in a way of being that local musicians and those born and raised in the Crescent City have always known – that there is no soul like that of New Orleans.
(Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul: Set One features works from Marcus Akinlana, Drew Cooke, Alex Demyan, Keith Eccles, Gavin Jones, Erika Goldring, Callie Joseph, Nancy Kimberly, Connie Kittok, George McClements, Jeff Morgan, Eric Nunez, Jamar Pierre, Sean Randall, Stephanie Reed, Jessica Strahan, Vincente Weber, Mike Williamson, and Alan Zakem.
Also on display at the hotel, Where Y’Art artist Cheryl Anne Grace has displayed a collection of acrylic paintings depicting iconic New Orleans musicians in her show The Gospel According to New Orleans, showcasing the musicians’ who’ve dubbed the city as the birthplace of Jazz. Her collection of vibrant, saint-like paintings is on view in the lobby corridor next to (Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul: Set One.
