The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is just a few blocks from Royal Street in the Marigny - the street in New Orleans to gallery hop – but you don’t even have to leave the hotel to get your art on.
Stroll through the corridor behind our lobby and experience an extension of the latest exhibition on display at Where Y’Art – a Royal Street Gallery in the heart of the Marigny. We love Where Y’Art. We love their mission, their passion and the way they have created a community for artists and art lovers in New Orleans.
Currently on display at the hotel, Art Crush I features original works from a lineup of 30 New Orleans artists curated by Dabito, a New Orleans-based designer, photographer for the New York Times Best Selling book “The New Bohemians” by Justina Blakenly and founder of the creative studio Old Brand New.
Art Crush I, explores the feeling of falling head over heels for the first time– be it with a piece of art, a place or another. Throwing aside rhyme or reason and abiding instead by intuition and simple attraction, Dabito’s selections of works featured in Art Crush I find commonality not in medium, hue, scale or theme, but rather in a particular kind of moment – one in which time seemingly stops and the person, the thing or the place you’ve been looking for is suddenly right in front of you.
Featuring a variety of mediums ranging from photographs and mixed media, to paintings, wood workings, printmaking and more, Dabito teamed up with West Elm to assert his keen eye for home design and art direction with vignette installations around the artworks featured in the exhibition, allowing art patrons to envision how the pieces can be styled in a home setting. Together, the diverse collection of works and curated installations by Dabito speak to the beautiful understanding that love – and art – exists in many forms and that the thrill of finding The One often comes when we least expect it.
If you want to explore further, start your Royal Street excursion at Where Y’Art’s main gallery – we can give you directions.
