At Compere Lapin, James Beard Award-winning chef, Nina Compton, heads up the kitchen of one of the best restaurants in the city. We are proud to showcase amazing local art partners and makers that, much like the city of New Orleans itself, are unconventional, filled with creativity and rooted in a uniquely local culture.

It is a true honor to partner with the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, a tuition-free high school founded by artists, educators and community activists that offers students from nine parishes around New Orleans intensive academic and arts instruction. NOCCA boasts a faculty rich with working artists and an illustrious roster of alumni that includes Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr., Terence Blanchard and many more. Our aim at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is to serve as an outpost for NOCCA in the Warehouse Arts District and help raise awareness for their mission. The artwork here in your guestroom was produced by student artists from the school’s upper level visual arts program as well as the copy of UMBRA, an annual publication created by the school’s creative writing students. Your purchase of a copy helps support NOCCA. You can also check out a revolving gallery of alumni work in the Chandlery, just off the lobby, all of which is for sale.

A stroll through the corridor behind our lobby will take you to an exciting gallery collaboration with our friends at Where Y’Art, a unique online gallery and community of over 100 visual artists, craftsmen, jewelry designers, sculptors, and photographers. If you’d like to check out their gallery on Royal Street, swing by the lobby and we’ll give you directions.

This city is brimming with craftspeople and makers and we have brought you the best of the best. Inspired by our building’s heritage as a warehouse provisioning the Port of New Orleans, our lobby also serves as a chandlery stocked with items from our very favorite local and regional creators of t-shirts, art, jewelry, fragrances, candles, soaps, and much more. Take home something uniquely local.

We are home to an Art-o-mat®, a repurposed cigarette vending machine that distributes small works of art for $5. The mid-1950’s vintage, green patina, 22-column machine in our lobby lived its former life in Baltimore and was warehoused for years before being converted into an Art-o-mat® by the Artists in Cellophane studio, restored and installed here to deliver art to you.
